With stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean, Signal Hill has played a vital role in defence and communications for three centuries. The shore batteries constructed in the 17th century were eventually replaced by significant fortifications at the summit as France and Great Britain fought for control of the continent. Between the British military's departure in 1870 and the arrival of American and Canadian forces during the Second World War, Signal Hill continued to serve as an active flag signaling and communication post. In 1901, atop Signal Hill, Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless transmission. This event is a milestone in the history of global communications.

A blue whale skeleton is displayed in the atrium of the Core Science Facility as a cultural and educational piece. It was found on the west coast of Newfoundland in 2014 after it washed up in Bonne Bay. Interestingly, Memorial University operates the Bonne Bay Marine Station. Core funding for the acquisition and preparation of the whale skeleton was generously provided by Mark and Sandra Dobbin, along with Craig and Lisa Dobbin, in memory of their mother, the late Eleanor (Penney) Dobbin. The atrium, which stands 30 meters (98 feet) tall, was specifically designed to accommodate the 25-meter (82-foot) whale skeleton, which is positioned to appear as if it is swimming. This arrangement reflects Memorial's motto, Provehito in Altum, meaning "launch forth into the deep," and embodies the spirit of exploration that is fundamental to the university.
